Recessed Butler's Pantry

Traditional Kitchen Design

This traditional kitchen design was built upon a foundation of neutral tones and natural textures. Working with Mike Beck, St. Louis interior designers Colleen Ertl and Megan Barry of Diane Breckenridge Interiors devised thoughtful and unexpected solutions for homeowners with a clear vision for their custom home’s kitchen and the surrounding main living space.

The island cabinet stain provides contrast to the perimeter and pairs beautifully with a custom-designed range hood. Woven shades, countertops and tile reference materials and textures found in nature, and the cast iron farmhouse sink affords a feeling of casual comfort.

Clever Solutions Using Cabinetry

A primary objective, visually speaking, was to achieve a seamless wall of uninterrupted perimeter cabinetry. In order to keep appliances out of sight, while maximizing storage space, a hidden pantry is concealed behind full-height doors, a custom panel was applied to the refrigerator and a recessed butler’s pantry houses the double oven and warming drawer.

Above the entry to the butler’s pantry (seen below), coordinating cabinet doors were fitted with glass to create a complementary transom, filling the room with natural light. Within the space, the drawer stack is fully functional while the cabinets above are not what they seem.

Opposite the pantry’s back wall is the home’s main staircase. Without the necessary depth, true wall cabinets were not a possibility. In their place, and to create the illusion of cabinetry, frames and doors were applied. This clever application afforded the space continuity and the look of true inset cabinetry.
