Coveted for its light color and dramatic grain, quarter sawn white oak is one of the most desired cabinet materials of the moment. Beck/Allen designer Allie Davis explains, “It provides variation and warmth but with a consistency and a more neutral tone than a traditional red oak.”

Quarter Sawn White Oak Kitchen Island

In the kitchen of a recently completed home by St. Louis builder, Renaissance Living, Allie selected white oak for the island. She paired it with a bright Polar White painted finish on the perimeter. Allie often suggests using a stained finish in a high-traffic area like a kitchen island where a stain/wood grain can be more forgiving than a painted finish.

Design Solutions

The homeowners had a distinct vision that drove the design of their kitchen which anchors the large, open floor plan of the main living area. They sought a bright space with clean lines—achieved through the choice of inset cabinetry—and an overall transitional design. Custom details included a single crown on wall cabinets, a coordinating transitional range hood and in stark contrast to the cabinet finishes, the homeowners selected black knobs and pulls, lighting and plumbing fixtures.
