It was not to chance that the Bluestones credit the success of their Clayton, MO kitchen renovation. Rather, two choices made early on set the course for their home’s happy ending. The process would not have gone as smoothly were it not for their choice of professionals, a team who clearly understood their vision for this 1928 Tudor Revival—FORNEY + architecture, LLC and Kim Taylor West of K Taylor Design Group.
In addition to a carefully chosen team, they rented an apartment for the entirety of the renovation, allowing the project to be completed at once rather than continuing slowly, room-by-room over the course of months, potentially years.
Throughout the process, they unearthed clues revealing the home’s original design, discovering architectural changes made over the years and during prior renovations. They worked to both preserve, and to alter with respect, the the home’s original intent to suit their lifestyle and family.
To create a larger, light-filled kitchen, they removed a wall leading to the dining room, joining the two spaces. Working with Mike Beck, white cabinets were selected to complement tile and painted brick. They were able to accommodate an abundance of windows while maximizing space by extending the wall cabinets to the countertop.
And at the heart of the new kitchen, a walnut top from Grothouse was selected to bring warmth and rich texture to the island. Among their list of must-haves, seating for two at the island to ensure the couple can be together during meal prep.
They transformed the nearby sun porch with custom cabinets and arched windows, taking it from barely-used to a high-functioning butler’s pantry and home serving pieces and cookbooks as well as coffee and espresso machines.
