Embarking on a kitchen design inevitably begins with a bit of self-reflection. What matters most? It may be appliance particulars, storage preferences, seating requirements, colors or cooking habits.
While the aforementioned certainly applied in the case of this Glendale renovation led by interior designer Megan Temple and Srote & Co Architects, the homeowners approached their project with something else in mind—the use of natural materials both inside and out.
Beyond the incorporation of natural materials in the home’s kitchen (copper, stone, wood) there was no question, there would be color—something edgy. And the cabinets would be anything but white.
A past project from Megan’s portfolio opened their eyes to the possibility of a black and white kitchen. A stroke of luck paired with perfect timing made the room’s focal point possible. After a year spent searching for the perfect stone, the answer came by way of an unexpected Instagram post. Scandalous Marble appeared via the Global Granite feed and a quick call secured the highly coveted, high-contrast slab.
A quiet sophistication was achieved through the balance of matte black cabinet hardware and plumbing fixtures with the kitchen’s dramatic color and scale. Lighting overhead pulls from the room’s palette and finishes, and a showpiece—the copper sink—adds to the thoughtful mix of metals.
Working with Tom Phillips, Megan selected a stain slightly softer than black: Shiloh’s Harbor finish. The dark charcoal stain was paired with poplar on the Windsor door style.
Specific appliances and their placement being a priority, cabinets were configured to suit the kitchen’s coffee machines, vacuum sealer and water dispensers among a host of other appliances by Sub Zero, Wolf, Cove, Miele, Thermador and Elkay.
The nearby mudroom provides a locker for every member of this family of five, mixing two Shiloh finishes: Harbor on cabinet doors and River Rock stain on the drawers below.
