Working with St. Louis interior designer Tina Wolff of Wolff Interiors on a recent remodel, this West County kitchen was reimagined as a light-filled, casual gathering place for family and friends. Admired for their refined, furniture-like appearance, beaded inset cabinets from Crystal Cabinet Works were selected. In pursuit of a brighter space, they chose a white painted finish for the perimeter. In contrast, a Slate stain adds interest and differentiates the kitchen’s island.
As with all renovations, using space wisely remained at the forefront of the design process. Because this home’s formal dining table is only steps away, they opted for an oversized island in place of a traditional breakfast table. With the creation of the larger island, they gained storage and prep space. In addition, they’re now able to comfortably seat their family of four.
Their wish for a brighter space drove the decision to eliminate wall cabinets. As a result, they considered shelving as an alternative that feels more open. They looked to local craftsman David Stine for live-edge options due to their understated profile and their handcrafted look and feel. Similarly, subway tiles with an undulated surface reference the authentic, refined yet rustic feel of the shelves above.
The island countertop possesses a visual softness. The colors and sweeping veins of Stratus Suede quartzite (with a honed finish) pair beautifully with the abundance of natural light. Unlike the island’s ethereal top, the kitchen’s perimeter cabinets are anchored by the dark, hard-wearing soapstone.
